Kayak Snack
I wanted to kind of take it easy today and I wanted hike the Bowman Bay loop trail today. We took our time getting up and getting ready for the day.
We drove over the whole 1.6 miles over to Bowman Bay. There were a ton of vehicles there already and many had kayak racks. Looking out at the bay, it made sense. The water was very calm!
We walked over to this little shed and saw a sign for kayak tours. The next one was at 11:30. It was 10:40. So I called the number listed and got us on the 11:30 tour. Perfect timing!
A family of nine showed up and we all got our vests, spray skirts and paddles and headed to the beach.
Raymond and I were in a two man kayak while the others were in three man kayaks. Gwen, our guide, gave us the spiel of how to paddle, safety information and what to expect and off we went.
One of the little kids saw “Julia the jellyfish”. And we saw a porpoise way ahead of us. Gwen found a kelp crab and picked it up to show everyone. The kid that found Julia the jellyfish named this crab Gerald. HA HA
Like we have seen along the entire coast of California, Oregon and now Washington, we saw more kelp. Up close and personal this time. It is so important for the oceans!
Gwen explained that you can eat kelp. While I knew this, it’s not something I’ve ever tried. I have tried seaweed. Once. That’s all I needed of THAT! Gwen went on to say that kelp has as much protein in it as chicken and that it tastes like lettuce. She encouraged us to try it. I thought she was joking. One of the other ladies tried it. I touched it - afraid it would be slimy. It was slimy but not as bad as I thought. I decided to try it. It does taste like lettuce! I wouldn’t make a salad of it or eat much. I do see the attraction.
Here’s a video of me trying it.
What funky food have you tried and been surprised by?
